7 years ago this week, Google first revealed the prototype of its driverless technology, shocked the automotive industry, and Google invested more than $1 billion in the study of autopilot.

Competitors acknowledge that Google is still ahead in technology, although skeptics question whether AI technology has been improved enough to cope with many unforeseen scenarios that may occur on the road.

"I'm afraid they're following the traditional Silicon Valley model: first a beta, then a patch in use," says John Simpson of Consumer Watchdog, an American consumer rights group.

Waymo believes that the company has taken the lead in meeting the so-called level 4 standard in the field of driverless cars, which means that its cars can be fully self-driving in pre-defined areas, which have been carefully mapped and tested.

Ultimate, General Motors, Delphi, BMW and other companies have also been testing to reach level 4, but these companies still have a real driver in the driver's seat.

Google autopilot project Waymo7 announced that its driverless car has been driving freely in Phoenix, Arizona, and no one on the front seat is ready to deal with emergencies.

The first truly driverless car, completely out of the driver's control while driving in the street, has finally arrived.

Waymo said that "in the next few months," the public could call these driverless cars to participate in the group's experiments through a car-calling software in the desert city of the southwestern United States.

Driverless technology may be one of the most subversive and hype-provoking new technologies, and driverless cars are at the core of a competition between large automobile manufacturers and technology companies. But while several groups are testing the technology on the road, with drivers behind the steering wheel just in case, most people still believe that it will take at least two years for fully automatic driving to arrive.

John Clafusik, the director of Waymo, said that although the experiment was limited to an undisclosed area, it was "not a one-off driving or demonstration" but the beginning of "Waymo and a new phase of the technology". He announced this landmark event at a technical conference held in Lisbon yesterday. Clafusik added that the company planned to extend the test to the entire Phoenix city, but did not give a timetable.
